New Merseyside lockdown rules: Exemptions for beer gardens and outdoor seating

The Liverpool city region is set to be placed under a tougher lockdown which will mean people are banned from mixing with other households in any indoor setting.

This includes pubs, bars and restaurants and will be applicable to the entire region as well as Halton and Warrington.

Speaking at the House of Commons today, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "The rules will be as follows, we recommend against all social mixing between people in different households, we will bring in regulations as we have in the North East to prevent, in law, social mixing between people in different households in all settings except outdoor public spaces like parks and outdoor hospitality."

This means there are places that are exempt from the rules, however even in these places the rule of six must still be followed.

According to Matt Hancock's statement, people will still be permitted to meet with those outside their household or support bubble in outdoor hospitality areas, such as an outdoor café, beer garden or any other outdoor food and drink venue. Parks are also excluded from the new rules.

Of course, where this can be avoided it should to help the city's cases reduce.

Mr Hancock also said that in our region, people should not attend professional or amateur sporting events as spectators. He called the new measures "necessary" and said "together we need to act" in a bid to control the virus.

Care home visits should only happen in exceptional circumstances and there will be guidance against all but essential travel - which includes trips to work and school.

Responding to calls from local leaders, the government has also agreed a funding package of £7m for the region to assist with the new restrictions.
