New Meanwood North Bar gets planning permission

Plans for a new North Bar in Meanwood were approved by councillors, after the developer moved to allay concerns.

Members on the west plans panel in Leeds Civic Hall had expressed reservations about plans to change the use of a cafe to a bar on Stonegate Road into a community pub.

Councillors were concerned about the impact of the bar, which adjoins Bay Cottage - the home of Andrea Franklin. They raised concerns about potential noise from the pub and issues with pub-goers smoking outside Mrs Franklin's house.

John Gyngell a director at North Bar, said that his company had been operating for 13 years across the city without any problems and stressed that his company was a responsible one and was sympathetic to Mrs Franklin's concerns. He told the meeting:

"We want to be part of the community - a local pub for the people of Meanwood, we don't see ourselves a s adestination bar. We're a caring company - if there are issues affecting local people, we will deal with them. We've always been good enighbours at our other pubs in Leeds"

He said that a soundproof wall would be installed so no oise could be heards in Mrs Franklin's house - and that smokes would be policed.

Councillors approved the application, subject to the applicant meeting a number of conditions to minimise noise and the imapct of smokers outside.

As reported last month, councillors have delayed a decision over approving a license for a community pub in Meanwood, following local concerns. The application will be heard again in the Civic Hall on September 20.

North Bar - which also runs The Cross Keys in Holbeck Urban Village and Further North in Chapel Allerton aims to open a bar until 11pm each night, 10pm on Sundays.
