New McDonald's for Asda Toryglen car park as plans submitted for restaurant near Hampden

Plans to build a McDonald’s and a children’s play area on an Asda car park have been submitted to Glasgow City Council.

The fast food chain has requested permission to build a two-storey restaurant, with a drive through, at the supermarket giant’s Toryglen store.

If approved, the Prospecthill Road scheme would also include a car park and a play area for children.

Permission for a McDonald’s restaurant on the supermarket site was previously granted in February 2017 despite concerns from local community councils.

That plan was for a unit fronting onto the road and was submitted alongside a separate application for a row of shops behind.

The new application would see the restaurant relocated to the back of the site.

A planning report states: “Car park occupancy statistics reveal that the store car park is underutilised, with a substantial number of spaces not used.

“As part of an exercise to rationale its estate, ASDA has identified the opportunity to incorporate some additional development at the Toryglen store, reducing the number of surplus car parking spaces and increasing the efficiency of the site.”

Mount Florida Community Council opposed the initial application, claiming putting a fast food outlet so close to Holyrood  Secondary School is irresponsible.

Worries were also raised about the lack of consultation during the planning process.

This time, the applicant has been urged to work closely with the surrounding community.

An updated transport statement has been submitted with the new application.

It states “the proposed McDonald’s Restaurant at Toryglen would not generate an unacceptable level of traffic”, adding it would cause “minimal impact on the traffic conditions on surrounding roads”.

“The site layout is acceptable as it is able to accommodate customers travelling by foot, cycle or car; and the layout allows for all deliveries to be made from within the site.”

Asda has owned and operated the superstore at Toryglen since its construction in 1997.

A McDonald’s spokeswoman, said:”We can confirm that we have submitted an application for a new restaurant on the site of Asda in Toryglen.

“This will replace the original application made in 2017 on the same site but for a different area which is no longer deliverable. The restaurant would create at least 65 jobs, and we are excited to be progressing with this opportunity and the significant investment it could bring to the local community.”
