New Mazda CX-30 to be global SUV

Unlike the CX-4 that’s made exclusively in China, the CX-30 will be sold elsewhere including Thailand.

Why is it called like that?

Welcome to the all-new Mazda CX-30, a compact SUV that is making its world premiere at the Geneva motor show this week.

Designed to sit in between today’s CX-3 and CX-5, the CX-30 has some sporty proportions to make it more appealing than, say, a Honda HR-V.

The CX-30 isn’t to be confused with the slightly bigger CX-4, a China-only model using the technical credentials of the CX-5. The CX-30’s wheelbase length of 2,655mm is 45mm shy of the CX-4’s.

According to sources, the decision to use the CX-30 moniker rests on a new badge strategy being employed by Mazda. However, it’s still not clear what the next-generation CX-3, CX-5, CX-8 and CX-9 will be called in the future.

Probably the maker that has the most clear-cut naming strategy is BMW. Depending on body style, size and price, there’s everything from the X1 to X7 arranged in a neat order.

A thing or two for Mazda to learn. What’s the CX-30 based on?

The CX-30 is based on the latest generation of the 3 compact sedan and hatchback, both of which have yet to come to Thailand to replace the existing ones.

The CX-30 becomes the second Mazda to use the latest in Skyactiv technologies. Petrol engines available for the CX-30 include 2.0-litre Skyactiv-X and 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G, both mated to six-speed automatic transmission driving either the front wheels or all four in range-topping form.

A 24V mild hybrid system will be applied in the CX-30 to help reduce CO2 emissions. A diesel using Skyactiv-D tech is also said to be available.

When is it coming to Thailand?

People at Mazda Sales Thailand are hoping to sell the CX-30 in less than a year from now.

As you may know, it will be quite a busy time for Mazda in Thailand in the current fiscal year (which ends in March). There will be that aforementioned 3, CX-8, updated 2 and CX-5 with new 2.5-litre option.

The CX-30 isn’t meant to replace the CX-3, which will eventually be renewed to continue sitting on the bottom of Mazda’s SUV range. Expect the CX-30 to be priced at some one million baht.
