Greta Iceberg, Chilly Billy and Grittney Spears will be helping keep the region’s roads safe this winter.
They are among the names chosen by school children for the council’s 18 gritters and snow ploughs.
And people will be able to keep track of their movements during the cold weather through a special map available at www.dumgal.gov.uk/winter.
Councillor Andy Ferguson, chairman of the communities committee, said: “Track My Gritter will allow residents to see when and where gritters and snow ploughs have been working in their area but they should be mindful that does not give any indication or guarantee of the current condition of the road network.
“Road conditions can deteriorate quickly in severe weather, even when they have been gritted or ploughed and drivers are advised to always drive in accordance with the prevailing road and weather conditions.”
The website will also let people see where grit bins can be found, making it easy to report if they’re empty, missing or have been vandalised.
Councillor John Martin, vice chairman of the communities committee, added: “Improving our communications with the public was one of the objectives in the review of the roads service carried out over the last year and this use of vehicle tracking provides interesting and useful information for road users in planning journeys.
