New Manchester United signing Edinson Cavani lifts lid on Neymar relationship

Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani admitted he isn't friends with Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar but said there is a mutual respect between himself and the Brazil international.

Cavani, 33, joined United on a free transfer on deadline day after leaving PSG and could make his Reds debut against his former side in the Champions League on October 20.

The forward hasn't played since March, meaning he is unlikely to qualify for the elite sportspeople exemption and is self-isolating for 14 days after arriving in the UK. As a result, he is expected to be unavailable for the Premier League clash against Newcastle.

Cavani and Neymar argued on the field in 2017 over who should take a penalty for PSG and their strenuous relationship was well documented during the pair's time together in France.

The new United signing admits the pair aren't friends but stressed he has a great amount of respect for his former teammate.

"He's a good person," he told ESPN Argentina. "The only time we had an issue, and everyone's knows this, was in the match against Lyon. We had a discussion in the locker room, but it ended there.

"We don't all have to be friends or a family within the squad. What matters is to be united on the pitch, protect each other, run one for the other.

"You don't need to all go out for dinner, what can't be lacking is the respect and efforts for your teammates.

"It's true Neymar and I didn't share much, but that didn't prevent us from having a good relationship and respect each other."
