New Manchester thunderstorm weather warning for tomorrow amid 33C temperatures

A fresh thunderstorm warning covering Greater Manchester has been issued by the Met Office.

The yellow weather alert is in place from 3pm on Thursday afternoon until 4am the following morning.

Temperatures are expected to climb to around 33C tomorrow, making it likely to be the hottest day of the year so far in Manchester.

But the hot weather will spark scattered thunderstorms later on in the day and will continue overnight.

According to the Met Office website there could be power cuts and damage to buildings where the lightning strikes.

Heavy spells of rain will accompany the stormy weather, with forecasters predicting there could be 20-30mm rain falling in some areas.

Driving conditions could also become difficult due to spray and sudden flooding, while the storm could also cause power cuts.

The warning covers the whole of the region, as well as Merseyside, Warrington, Cheshire and Lancashire.

A statement on the Met Office website said: "Following a hot day (in places exceptionally so), scattered thunderstorms are likely to break out from late afternoon onwards.

"While some areas, particularly in the south of the warning area, may well avoid the storms, where they do occur they could produce 20-30 mm of rain in less than an hour, along with frequent lightning, hail and gusty winds.

"Perhaps the main focus will be later in the evening and into the first part of the night across northern England and southern and eastern parts of Scotland, where storms could be more widespread and locally intense."
