New Man Utd skipper Harry Maguire sends message to Liverpool

New Manchester United captain Harry Maguire said his side's draw against Liverpool in November will give them confidence going into the game against their rivals on Sunday.

Maguire was named the new captain of United after Ashley Young's £1.28m move to Inter Milan was confirmed on Friday.

The Red Devils' 1-1 draw with Liverpool in November is so far the only time a team have taken points off Liverpool all season, and speaking to the club's official website Maguire said his side will be relishing the opportunity to try to do it again.

When asked if their previous result against the Reds will give them a boost, Maguire said: "Yes, it gives us confidence, but as a team we’re confident going into any game.

"We drew against Liverpool and we beat City, who are the top teams in the Premier League at the moment, so we’re confident that we can get three points from any game and that’s what we’ll be going to do on Sunday."

Maguire also spoke of the privilege he felt to be named United captain, having only joined the club in August.

He continued: "It’s a massive honour to be the captain of this prestigious club. It’s a great feeling for myself but the hard work continues and I’ll keep doing the best I can, on and off the pitch, to make this club successful."

United go into the game against Liverpool looking to continue their push for a place in the top four, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side currently lying five points behind fourth-place Chelsea .

Their top goalscorer Marcus Rashford could miss out after injuring his back in United's FA Cup third round win over Wolves on Wednesday, while Marcos Rojo and Scott McTominay are also still sidelined and Luke Shaw is a doubt after struggling with a hamstring problem.
