New Man Utd coach Darren Fletcher has already made feelings clear on Anthony Martial

Darren Fletcher has become the latest member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team coaching staff.

The former midfielder has been given the role after recently cutting his teeth coaching with United’s academy.

He will now step up to work with first-team stars ahead of a huge second half of the Premier League season.

And he has already admitted being “surprised” by one particular player the past.

Anthony Martial has been inconsistent during his time at Manchester United.

But he found a rich vein of form that caught Fletcher off guard following the resumption of the Premier League last year.

It prompted the Scot to state he has all the makings of an “elite No.9” as he made his admiration for the talented Frenchman clear.

"I thought Anthony Martial was fantastic," Fletcher said on MUTV Group Chat after United's 2-2 draw with Southampton .

"I think his endeavour, his work-rate… the talent has always been there.

"I think he’s been fantastic. I think we’re seeing somebody on the cusp – if he keeps this going – of being a real elite No.9 goalscorer.

"His attitude all night was a real positive for me.”

After struggling to recapture his form from last season this Premier League campaign, Martial has been backed to kick-on after finding the net against Aston Villa in United’s last game.

Solskjaer said: “Anthony is going to improve. He’s going to be better and better. He’s had a few chances this season.

“He’s still creating chances, he’s just not had that little bit of luck, margins in front of goal. They’ll come. We saw a better version of Anthony, a more confident one.”

Asked about his efforts to bring the best out of Martial: he added: “We’ve had some chats, of course.

“We have spoken about last season and how important he was for us then and he is going to be important for us this season.

“A player’s form is temporary but when you have got class that is permanent. I think he has proven he is class.

“Now he is getting fitter and fitter and that means he is going to get better and better.
