New Man City signing Rodri's shirt number confirmed

Manchester City have announced the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri, finally ending their search for a new defensive midfielder.

City have been searching for a successor to Fernandinho for over a year, and have paid a club record fee to bring Rodri, 23, to the Etihad.

And if taking over the long-term responsibilities from Fernandinho wasn't enough, Rodri is also taking a significant squad number as he looks to help his new side in retaining the domestic treble.

Announcing the transfer, City confirmed Rodri has signed a five year deal at the club, and Director of Football Txiki Begiristain described him as a 'perfect fit' for Pep Guardiola's side.

City also confirmed Rodri will wear the number 16 shirt during his time at the club.

The number was last worn by Sergio Aguero, another transfer from Atletico Madrid, who donned the shirt between 2011-2015 before taking the no.10.

It has been vacant since.

Upon joining, Rodri said: “What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I’m looking forward to being part of such a talented squad.

“It’s not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times. It’s a style that excites me, as do the Club’s ambitions.

“I can’t wait to start working with Pep Guardiola and my new team-mates and hopefully we can achieve great things together.”

Rodri becomes the club's second signing of the summer after Angelino returned on a permanent deal from PSV Eindhoven having come through the ranks at the Etihad.
