New Maitland Hospital reaches new heights

Topping out ceremony.

THE new Maitland Hospital has reached its highest point of construction.

The "significant" milestone for the project was marked with a native water gum tree craned onto the roof - a tradition believed to bring luck to occupants of the hospital.

Minister for Mental Health, Bronnie Taylor, said the $470 million project would "transform healthcare for the Hunter."

"The new facility offers a wide range of services for the growing population in the region with significantly more beds and treatment spaces," she said. "It has been designed in collaboration with staff and the community to better meet the changing healthcare needs of the area."

Almost 5000 new jobs would be created through the hospital development, supported by the Maitland Connectivity Centre.

"Despite the restrictions of COVID-19, we are proud the Connectivity Centre has remained open and has placed nearly 50 candidates into employment opportunities on the project so far," she said.

Mrs Taylor commended the team for the support it has offered to the local community and workforce in challenging economic times.
