New look Solway Sportive will take cyclists through Stewartry scenery

The Solway Sportive, a popular event which has been a mainstay of the cycling calendar in Dumfries and Galloway for the last 10 years, is being given a new look.

This year it is being organised by volunteers from Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary and Dalbeattie Community Initiative with all proceeds going to local charities.

Over the last three years alone an outstanding £10,000 has been raised.

The organisers launched the event on Tuesday at Dumfries Rugby Club – where it starts and finishes on Sunday, May 19 – and encouraged cyclists of all abilities to get on their bikes and take part.

Galloway cyclists join forces to promote new SW300 route

Rotarian Andrew Clark said: “We are hoping for a good turnout on May 19 and encourage cyclists to sign up.

“Riders will be able to enjoy a great day out riding through beautiful Dumfries and Galloway on quiet roads while also raising money for local charities.

“It is hoped to be a great, fun event even and a timed certificate is presented to all finishers.”

The event routes have been completely revised with newly selected Yellow 40, Blue 75 and Red 100 to challenge experienced and novice cyclists alike.

Call for more to be done to promote Dumfries and Galloway as a tourism destination

It provides a greater choice with the shortest 70km (43 miles), a mid-route of 123km (76 miles) and for the first time a long route of 162km (100 miles).

The longest route will take the most experienced cyclists along the Solway coast to Sandyhills, into Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas and then along Loch Ken and up to Carsphairn before turning homeward through Corsock to Crocketford and then the Military Road back to Dumfries.

Mr Clark said: “The course covers an elevation gain of some 1,490m and takes cyclists through some beautiful countryside on quiet roads on routes designed by fellow cyclists.

“Feeding stations will be available on all three routes and food/drink is provided at the finish.

“Entries can be made on the day at the Rugby Club or online through www.solwaysportive.co.uk
