New look Lockerbie Ice Rink revealed to the public

A new look Lockerbie Ice Rink has been unveiled.

The entrance has been given a new appearance to ensure it is accessible for everyone. Funding to transform the existing skating pay booth and workshop areas to a reception area with an access window was received from the Dumfriesshire East Community Benefit Group, Scottish Power Renewables and the ice rink itself which allowed the much needed improvements to be completed.

Siobham Jarvie, Scottish Power Renewables community liaison officer, said: “It’s brilliant to see the difference this funding has made right across the region and really exciting to see the monies for Lockerbie Ice Rink have transformed the reception area and supported improvements to make it easier than ever for people of all abilities to access the facilities.

“This is a great example of community benefit in action and I’m sure the work will be appreciated by everyone taking to the ice and using the facility.”

A spokesperson for Lockerbie Ice Rink said: “The ice rink is very grateful for the funding received from Dumfriesshire East Community Benefit Group, Scottish Power Renewables and also the support received from local contractors who carried out the work through the difficult times of the Covid pandemic to ensure that the facility opened on time.”

Around 1,000 different people use the ice rink for curling and skating each winter. After school curling, mini rockers and try curling sessions are run throughout the season, all free of charge.

Public skating takes place most weekends and an inclusive quiet time skating session is available on Saturday mornings.

There is no cost for under six skating other than the hire of skates. There is also provision for private skating parties and a skating club which is run on a Sunday morning.
