New Livingston keeper Matija Sarkic says he jumped at the chance to sign - despite knowing little about the club

Matija Sarkic admits he knew little about Livingston - but still jumped at the chance to join the Lions on loan from English Premiership side Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old moves north of the border for the 2019/20 season and is targeting first team football in Scotland’s top flight as he battles it out with Ross Stewart for the starting role.

Sarkic, who is a Montenegro under-21 international and came through the Anderlecht youth system prior to moving to Aston Villa, said: “I’m excited for the challenge and it’s a new adventure for me. I can’t wait to get started and show the boys what I can do.

“I’ll be honest: I didn’t know much about Livingston but as soon as I was told they were interested and that they’d done all the research and wanted to bring me on board I wanted to sign.

“I’m a young goalkeeper and it’s all about getting games and experience and that’s what I’m here for. I’ve played at under-21 level for Montenegro against some big players and countries but I need to get games.”

He added: “I want to help the team to get as high as possible in the table. I know I’m an Aston Villa player but I can’t think about that.

“I have a job to do and I don’t want to look too far ahead. It’s about taking things game by game and doing well for the team. If you do that then the natural progression is that things will come down the line.”
