New Line of Duty images revealed as filming for season 6 gets underway

The BBC have today shared plot details about the sixth instalment of Jed Mercurio's hit thriller.

Publishing images from the set today, they've revealed that the new series of the show, which is filmed in Belfast, is set a year and a half on from the events of series five, and will feature a brand new case for AC-12, focused on an enigmatic Detective Chief Inspector.

As previously announced, Scottish actor Kelly MacDonald will star as the DCI in question - Joanne Davidson - a senior investigating officer on an unsolved murder case.

Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compston - who have all been leads in the show since the first season - will all return.

The BBC have also shared details about cast members who will be joining the Line of Duty team for the first time, including Shalom Brune-Franklin (Our Girl, Cursed), Perry Fitzpatrick (This Is England, I Am Nicola), Andi Osho (Kiri, Curfew) and Prasanna Puwanarajah (Doctor Foster, Patrick Melrose).

The first images released today show Martin Compston's character of Steven Arnott speaking to his fellow AC-12 officers, while a photo of Kelly MacDonald police ID credentials is shown in the background.

A second photo shows a director's clapperboard, with Adrian Dunbar in full Superintendent get-up behind it.

Writing about the first day of filming on Twitter today, the show's creator Jed Mercurio said: "First day of filming #LineofDuty6 @BBCOne @worldprods. It's great to be back on the hunt for bent coppers. Rest assured our camera crew will do better than my amateur snaps."

The new series of Line Of Duty will premiere on BBC One later this year.

We've yet to get confirmation from the BBC about an exact broadcasting date, but during an interview with Today FM recently, Adrian Dunbar said that the new series will air in the autumn.

"We're only about to start filming on Monday and the likelihood is that the next series of Line of Duty will only be going out on our screens in late autumn. You know, that sort of time," he said.
