The original PlayStation first launched way back in 1994, when the idea of doing a disc-based video game console was a risky proposition and Sony was perhaps most closely associated with the Walkman than anything else. In the intervening years we’ve had three more PlayStations to work with, and a few more if you count slims and pros as new consoles. All told, the company has sold more than 500 million PlayStations– more than 523.5 million, actually– and it’s celebrating with a limited edition PS4 Pro. Let’s take a look:
Alright fine. It’s beautiful. Is that what you wanted to hear? I admit it. I’m not usually a fan of special consoles like these, mostly because the elegant black of the original boxes is just fine for me, thank you very much. But this? This is a very nice-looking piece of machinery. It’s a deep, translucent blue that shows off just enough to be coy, not quite enough to be garish. It’s those copper accents that really do it for me, however, touching the whole thing off with a little class.
If you want one, they won’t be cheap. The limited edition Ps4 Pro will set you back a full $499 and limited to 50,000 units worldwide. So this is for the Sony diehard that hasn’t upgraded to a Pro for whatever reason, or more accurately the Sony diehard who’s willing to trade in their current Pro and pay the difference for one of the prettiest machines on the market. Or maybe even more accurately, the Sony diehard and collector that’s just sort of swimming in cash. Let’s watch a video:
The bundle includes a matching Dualshock 4 and camera–the camera isn’t included in standard bundles, so the up-sell isn’t quite the full $100 over the $399 price of a normal Pro. It also comes with a 2tb hard drive for those unwilling to ever uninstall The Witcher 3. It’s still a pricey console, however. For that price you could get an Xbox One X, though you’d be missing out on all of those lovely exclusives that make that PlayStation ecosystem such a nice place to be.
The PS4 Pro limited edition will be available on August 24. I’m not going to by one, I swear.
