New Liffey Cycle Route finally revealed - and it's going to have a major impact along the quays

Dublin City Council has finally revealed the proposed new €20 million Liffey Cycle Route.

The council has published a report recommending a route that will run from the Phoenix Park in the west to the Tom Clarke Bridge in the east of the city.

They're proposing segregated cycle lanes along the city centre quays which will run along the buildings side of the road as far as the Four Courts.

Figures show number of homeless people in Ireland hits record high of more than 10,000

The lanes will then switch to the river side in order to avoid the congestion caused by buses travelling and stopping along the building side.

The council yesterday published the first artist impressions of the route, which show a raised kerb separating the cycle lane from the car and bus lanes.

The long overdue route comes as DCC revealed the number of cyclists now represents a larger percentage of road users than car drivers, exceeding 1,000 in the morning peak travel times.

The report stated: “The Recommended Option for the Liffey Cycle Route recognises the need to maintain private car access to the core city centre, but existing provision for car parking will be reassigned in favour of pedestrian, cycle, bus, and public realm improvements in compliance with current transport planning policy."

The report also stated that a public consultation will take place ahead of any building works.

It comes seven years after the idea was first mooted in 2012.
