New Lidl to replace H&M store in Bristol city centre

Lidl is planning to open a new supermarket in Bristol city centre.

The German retailer is eyeing up opening a new shop in place of H&M at the bottom of Union Street.

The company has submitted a premises licence application to Bristol City Council which, if approved, would allow the proposed shop to sell alcohol between 7am and 11pm, from Monday to Friday.

H&M, which also has outlets at Cabot Circus and Cribbs Causeway, declined to comment on the potential closure when contacted by Bristol Live.

The clothing store has been located in Unit 1 of the building which houses the Odeon cinema for more than a decade.

The building was constructed on the site of the original Fry's chocolate factory, before the company moved to a new factory in Keynsham in 1921.

After Fry's stopped production at Union Street, the factory buildings lay derelict for some years before being demolished and replaced by the cinema complex, which was then converted into a triple screen cinema in 1974.

H&M on the ground floor of the building was previously a Mothercare, and before that the former foyer of the cinema, which is now accessed further up Union Street.

Lidl has 10 stores across Bristol but this would be its first in the city centre, if plans go ahead.

Its most central shops are located in Lawrence Hill and Bedminster.

Bristol Live has contacted Lidl about the plans and is awaiting a response.
