New Lidl opens its doors in North Shields with charities set to benefit

North Shields shoppers got their first glimpse of the new Lidl store as it opened its doors this week.

The new supermarket, near North Tyneside General Hospital, will create around 40 jobs for local people, and takes the number of stores operated by the German grocery chain to around 800.

The new Lidl will feature an in-store bakery (SWNS)

The store opening times will be between 8am - 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am – 4pm on Sunday.

The 1,380m² sales area features an instore bakery, customer toilet and parking for bicycles as well as cars.

And local charities are set to benefit from the opening, as Lidl's Feed It Back scheme will be providing surplus produce from the store to groups such as The Cedarwood Trust and Pearey House Centre for Visually Impaired.

The scheme, which is run in partnership with Neighbourly and connects Lidl stores up and down the country with local charities, foodbanks, community cafes and kitchens, putting quality food surplus to good use every day.

The store, which opened on Rake Lane on Thursday, is part of the company’s ongoing £1.3bn expansion and regeneration plans across Great Britain for 2021 and 2022.
