New Lidl and eight retail units to be built on site of old Waitrose shop

Plans have been approved for a new retail park to be built in the old Waitrose in Wollaton.

The building itself will not be knocked down, but will be significantly altered.

The covered pedestrian walkway which leads into the car park will be demolished.

Much of the side of the building from which the walkway is attached will be knocked out and replaced with glass fronts.

The interior of the building - which included a cafe - will then be subdivided into one large space for the Lidl, and eight smaller spaces.

A small extension will also be built at the southwest corner - the corner closest to you as you drive in.

A bakery, a post office and a charity shop are among the shops which will use some of the units, however, the occupants of the others are yet to be announced.

The car park will also be significantly re-designed, and a limited number of electric vehicle charging points will be installed.

The plans were unanimously approved by Nottingham City Council’s planning committee yesterday (Wednesday, January 19)

However, concerns were raised about the entrance to and from the busy Trowell Road, with one councillor suggesting traffic lights should be installed.

Nearby residents also raised concerns that some of the eight new shops could be takeaways, which might exacerbate anti-social behaviour problems.

The meeting was assured no takeaways were being introduced in the current plans, and that any future proposal to open a takeaway would require further, separate, planning permission.

The proposal also includes the re-configuration of the car park, with 16 more car parking spaces bringing the total to 338 spaces.

This includes 12 disabled parking spaces and the addition of nine parent and child spaces (at present there are none).
