New leader of Fianna Fail needed, Eamon O Cuiv says

A new leader of Fianna Fail is needed, a veteran member of the party said today.

Eamon O Cuiv, TD for Galway West, has called on Micheal Martin to step down and for someone else to take his place. Speaking to Claire Byrne on RTE Radio One, he said: “You can sit there and watch what was a very large party go into terminal decline.

“We need to look at everything again. We haven’t yet had a review of the election, we haven’t looked at what’s going wrong since the election.”

Referring to Marc McSharry’s comments about Tanaiste Leo Varadkar running rings around the Taoiseach, Mr O Cuiv said: “Listen to solid Fianna Fail people saying he’s upstaging Micheal Martin.

“I do think we need a new leader, I do believe we need a change of direction.” However, he would not be drawn on who he thought the new party chief should be.

Looking at the poll numbers, Claire Byrne asked was he fearful of Fine Gael pulling the plug.

However, Mr O Cuiv said he felt they would love the plug to be pulled for them.
