TAMWORTH councillor Glenn Inglis will take charge of Upper Hunter Shire Council for up to four months.

The former Tamworth council general manager (GM), and current serving councillor, was appointed the interim GM of Upper Hunter after a council meeting on Monday afternoon.

Mr Inglis will will manage the council from Wednesday for up to four months as it searches for a permanent replacement to Steve McDonald, who resigned in July.

Upper Hunter council said Mr Inglis' appointment was finalised on Monday, after earlier discussions last week.

"He brings many years of hands-on, practical experience in the business of local government, and ensuring ratepayers are getting value for money through the wide range of services council delivers," Mayor Maurice Collison said.

"Council is also working with Local Government NSW to manage the process to recruit a new, permanent General Manager."

It's not yet known what impact the posting will have on Mr Inglis' current Tamworth council duties, and whether he will continue to serve during the deployment.

Mr Inglis, who lives in Tamworth with family, has decades of experience in the local government sector.

He was the general manager of the old Parry Shire Council from 1993 to 2004 before it was amalgamated into Tamworth Regional Council.

He took on the job in Tamworth from 2005 to 2010.

Since then, he has carried out a review of councils by the state government, and performed GM duties at councils across the New England North West including Armidale Dumaresq, Uralla, Narrabri, Tenterfield, Uralla and Coonamble.
