New laid-back steakhouse opens in Bristol city centre

Bristol's newest steakhouse serves the highest quality cuts of meat at reasonable prices, according to its owner.

Steak Me Out launched as a temporary food delivery service in April, but its soaring popularity has enabled the man behind it to make it a permanent fixture of the city's food and drink scene.

Rob Gilkes will continue offering his delivery service for those who don't yet feel comfortable dining out while running his new bricks and mortar steakhouse, which has replaced former café Siam Angel in St George's Road.

The 26-year-old started the service after being placed on furlough by the Greene King pub he managed - a position he had held for just a month before lockdown was announced. Rob had moved to Bristol from London, where he worked in various pubs for nearly 10 years.

"I started Steak Me Out in April after being furloughed, and only really intended for it to be a temporary thing," he said.

"But demand grew and grew and became fairly astronomical as more people heard about it, so I thought the next logical step would be to open a restaurant.

"I started looking around for places and this site came up, which is absolutely perfect for what I want to offer."

Rob, who has since resigned from his pub manager job to focus on Steak Me Out, said his restaurant offers a more casual steakhouse experience with a "laid back, personal feel" and lower prices than those found at the city's high-end steak restaurants.

Despite the reasonable pricing, he said food quality is the most important aspect to him and something he would "never compromise on," with customers expecting the "highest quality cuts of meat sourced locally".

The reviews certainly seem to back up his claim, with one customer writing "best steak in Bristol and excellent value for money" and another adding "absolutely the best steak I have had in Bristol, including much pricier steak restaurants".

Alongside the steaks, which are all served with triple cooked chips and salad and range in price from £14 for the 10oz sirloin up to £45 for the 38oz tomahawk, there's also burgers, salads and caramelised pork belly to choose from.

To wash down the food there's a range of locally-brewed beers, wines and spirits - with Rob eyeing up the potential for bottomless brunches and other events once his restaurant is established.

"It's really exciting to be up and running and the response has been great so far," he added.

"I never thought I'd be in a position to open a permanent restaurant when I launched the delivery service just four months ago, and would like to thank everyone who made it possible."
