New Knowsley secondary school for 60 pupils set for approval

Plans to build a new secondary school in Knowsley are set to be approved next week.

The council’s planning committee will meet on Tuesday to consider proposals from academy chain The Witherslack Group for a new school on the former Wheathill Riding Centre off Naylor’s Road in Roby.

It would be built on land that already hosts Lakeside School, a primary school for children with complex educational needs aged between 5-13.

Witherslack focuses specifically on providing education to children with special educational needs.

Reports submitted to councillors said the new school would be focused on secondary provision and would have a capacity of 60 pupils.

The report said: “The application proposes the demolition of the vacant buildings on the eastern side of the site and its redevelopment as a secondary school for 60 pupils.

“The secondary school would be run by the ‘Witherslack Group’ who also operate the primary school and the application includes proposals for a shared entrance into both schools, and a shared car park and ‘drop off’ area.”

The new building would include 12 classrooms, sensory spaces for Special Educational Needs pupils and a hall, kitchen and offices.

The land is currently allocated as green belt but council documents say it is in a poor state and has suffered from anti-social behaviour, including arson, flytipping and vandalism.

A new play area and separate games area would also be built as part of the plans.

Knowsley Council’s planning committee will consider the proposals next Tuesday.
