New Kirkcudbright flood prevention measures tested by torrential downpour

New flood prevention measures in Kirkcudbright appear to be doing their job.

Deeside businesses feared the worst last weekend after days of torrential rain flooded land and roads along the Dee catchment.

Premises in Beaconsfield Place have been badly hit in recent years by flooding partially caused by inadequate surface drainage.

But on this occasion, work done by Scottish Water to avert further damage seems to have been effective.

Woodstock Interiors boss Ian Cameron-Smith was one of those breathing a huge sigh of relief.

He said: “They have upgraded the drains and it all works now.

“I was fairly confident they had made a good job of it.

“We had a couple of real deluges but the water drained away fairly quickly.

“They also provided us with storm doors as well.

“Since they completed the work the drains have all operated properly.”

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We are delighted that the work we have carried out to date has improved the situation for customers in Kirkcudbright.

“We have introduced several measures to reduce flooding including using smart network software to change the way our pumping stations operate, diverting water away from the area.

“Our local teams are continuously monitoring the network and further solutions are under development to provide more protection.”
