The Treasury Department is seeking a cabinet resolution to mint a new set of circulating coins featuring a portrait of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn following the royal assent.
The department is waiting to issue the ministerial announcement to produce the coins. It is unknown when they will start in circulation, said Patchara Anuntasilpa, department director-general.
The size and weight of the coins will remain compatible with current vending machines, he said. The new coins will comprise nine denominations: 10 baht, five baht, two baht, one baht, 50 satang, 25 satang, 10 satang, five satang and one satang. Those valued less than 25 satang are produced for banks' account settlement.
Mr Patchara said the department received His Majesty the King's assent on His portrait for commemorative coins to mark His Majesty the King's coronation.
