New Kill the Bill protest planned in Bristol this weekend

A new Kill the Bill protest is being planned in Bristol this weekend.

The demonstration will take place on Saturday (May 29) from 4pm at College Green, according to social media posts.

This will be the 13th Kill the Bill protest in Bristol, with the last one taking place at the beginning of May to coincide with International Worker's Day.

The last march caused traffic disruption on key routes through the middle of the city, with people walking on the roads and forcing drivers to stop.

The end of the city's first Kill the Bill protest descended into chaos following disorder outside Bridewell Police Station on Sunday, March 21.

Avon and Somerset Police launched a major public appeal to identify people they wanted to speak to in connection with the disorder and earlier this week officers made six more arrests.

The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill - which has been at the centre of the Kill the Bill movement - proposed by the Government would give police and the Home Secretary increased powers to stop protests.

The Bill makes a special new law to protect monuments and statues, in the wake of the toppling of the statue of Edward Colston, with the crime of damaging them punishable by up to ten years in prison.

Under the government proposals trespass would become a criminal offence - rather than being a civil matter - in order to tackle unauthorised encampments, giving police the power to seize vehicles and arrest people who refuse to move.

Those breaking the new law could be fined up to £2,500 and could face a prison sentence of up to three months, but concerns have been raised by both academics and organisations that the new law will disproportionately affect travellers and more widely those living on roadside camps.
