New kebab shop in Nottingham aims to take a 'modern' approach

The owner of a new kebab and pizza restaurant in Nottingham city centre has shared what makes the venue unique.

On Saturday July 27, Kani Kebab and Pizza opened its doors to welcome customers in Long Row, just off the Old Market Square.

Despite the wet weather, friends and family turned out to celebrate the launch.

The new restaurant opens in a popular area of the city, with the Fat Cat Cafe Bar recently moving into their new premises nearby and a collection of other eateries and bars also next door.

The building was formerly the cafe Tea Trolley and has been empty for a number of months.

Amjad Hussain, owner of Kani Kebab and Pizza said he has employed ten staff members, with a mix of part-time and full-time contracts.

He added that the restaurant is his first venture into the food and hospitality industry.

The 30-year-old said: "We came up with the concept together as a family. This was just a shell of a building but we have spent more than six months developing it.

"It's been amazing to work on. It's a more modern style kebab shop - we want people to see the kitchen and see it's completely different to the norm.

"We spent between a year and 18 months sourcing the best quality meats to make sure the kebabs were good quality and we employ experienced chefs.

"One of our specialities is the Sultani Kebab which is made with veal.

"We also offer pizzas cooked in a pizza oven so they're less greasy. There's nothing like this in Nottingham.

The restaurant caters for up to 60 seated inside, but also offers takeaway and will be introducing delivery in the coming weeks.

Mr Hussain added that there would be the possibility of more employment in the future.

"We wanted to give more opportunities to local people," Mr Hussain said.

"It's a good place for students to get their first job. We just want to give people a chance to get experience.

"I'm really excited and just hoping it does well. We have put a lot of time and effort into this project.

"I will be here on site for the beginning to oversee how things go."

One of the new recruits spoke about her excitement for Kani adding that there was a good sense of teamwork from the staff.

Ester Horvatova, 18, said: "I started a couple of days ago, and I'm just excited about meeting new people.

"It will be nice to see how popular the place is once it opens.

"The food is really delicious, we have had a chance to try it all. The kebabs are the best and I would recommend the chicken pizzas.

"I've known everyone here for a long time and we all just work as a team. It's like family."

The opening hours for Kani Kebab and Pizza is from 11am until 3am, Monday to Sunday.
