New Jurgen Klopp contract talks planned as his 'rampaging' Liverpool side hailed after Villarreal win

On the morning after they moved to within 90 minutes of reaching the Champions League final, here's your Liverpool FC headlines for Thursday, April 28.

Jurgen Klopp contract latest as FSG target new Liverpool deal

Liverpool are hopeful of agreeing a new contract with Jurgen Klopp to extend his stay at the club beyond 2024. It is understood the Reds boss has suggested he would be open to a further deal at Anfield, where he has been in charge since October 2015.

Mike Gordon, the president of Fenway Sports Group and influential in the running of the club, was at Wednesday's Champions League semi-final leg against Villarreal, where he was sat near Klopp's agent Mark Kosicke.

Gordon was key to negotiating Klopp's last contract extension in December 2019 and will again lead the talks with FSG happy to allow the German to remain in charge for as long as he sees fit.

Klopp - whose side remain in the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple after beating Villarreal 2-0 - had long been expected to leave when his present deal ends in just over two years, having helped Liverpool to a sixth Champions League triumph, a first-ever FIFA Club World Cup triumph and ended a 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England.

The Reds boss admitted in February his enthusiasm had waned last season following a campaign behind closed doors, stating: “I couldn’t have cared less at that moment, just get through it and that is absolutely true. Why shouldn’t managers be different? But for all of us it was the same. We were all like really drained. Just finished. Done.”

However, Klopp spoke in March where he appeared open to the possibility of further extending his stay.

Liverpool claimed a 2-0 win over Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.

The Reds claimed the victory thanks a Pervis Estupinan own goal followed by a Sadio Mane strike in the second half, which settled the tie. Jurgen Klopp’s side will now travel to Newcastle United in the Premier League this Saturday before taking on Villarreal in the return leg at the Estadio de la Ceramica next Tuesday.

Plenty of Spanish news outlets were at Anfield to watch Liverpool's win over Villarreal. Here's what they thought...

Julian Burgos, via AS

“Villarreal left Anfield standing. Staggering and with deep wounds, after being buffeted viciously by a rampaging Liverpool in the second half. But in the end, standing up. And wanting to continue fighting in the best competition in the world. Henderson, with a lot of luck, and Mané [struck for Liverpool]. Overcoming this advantage to the fittest team in Europe seems like a very difficult task. But this Villarreal has shown they can handle everything in this Champions League. With Gerard Moreno recovered, there may be a loophole to turn the tie around in six days.
