New jobs could be created as part of plans to open 24-hour gym at Lady Bay Retail Park

A new 24-hour gym could open at Lady Bay Retail Park - creating up to 15 new jobs.

Plans have been put forward to change the use of an empty unit at the site, between The Meadows and Sneinton, off Meadow Lane, which used to be occupied by Poundworld Plus and has been vacant since July last year.

An application has been submitted on behalf of The Gym Group to open there.

The company already has facilities in Trinity Square, in Nottingham city centre, Mansfield Road, Sherwood, and at the Castle Marina Retail Park, in Radford, which has recently opened thanks to a £1.25m investment.

Planning documents, which have been submitted to Nottingham City Council, read: "The Gym are seeking a 24-hour gym and leisure use in line with their operational procedures across the UK.

"The Gym has built a successful business model operating 24-hour health and fitness uses, and therefore has considerable experience in ensuring that their units operate efficiently and without disruption.

"The Gym provides a high quality but cheaper option for health and fitness activity, with 24-hour opening hours providing flexibility for its customers. A central part of The Gym’s operations is the 24-hour availability of their facilities for use by their members."

According to the plans, the move could create up to 15 full-time jobs.

The planning documents add: "The proposed use is aimed at catering for the surrounding local area, with the majority of users of the facility constituting residents and employees from the surrounding neighbourhoods.

"The Gym aims to increase access to health and fitness activities to a wide demographic to encourage and improve health by providing a low cost and flexible gym membership option. The Gym provides a high-quality but cheaper option for health and fitness activity."

Described as a "budget operator", the facility is expected to include cardiovascular equipment and weights.

The site will provide 378 car parking spaces for visitors and staff.

If approved, the new facility would add to the offering at the retail park which includes The Range, B&M, Hobbycraft and SCS.

Business leaders welcomed the prospect of added investment.

Chris Hobson, director of policy and external affairs at the East Midlands Chamber, said: "This new development adds value to the retail’s park’s offering, and the Chamber welcomes this new investment both for the jobs it creates and for encouraging a healthy lifestyle amongst local people."

Labour councillor Nicola Heaton, who represents The Meadows ward for the city council, said: "It seems beneficial to the area - and obviously new jobs would be very welcome."

She added the move was positive in bringing an empty unit back into use.
