New Jeanfield Swifts signing Ewan Moyes is "excellent footballer and character"

New Jeanfield signing Ewan Moyes will be a “huge player” for the club, manager Ross Gunnion believes.

The experienced defender’s Riverside move was confirmed before Saturday’s 3-0 East of Scotland Qualifying Cup first round win against Harthill Royal.

Moyes, who started his career with Hibs and played his part in the weekend clean sheet success, is set to lead by example on and off he pitch.

“It was great to get the deal over the line for Ewan Moyes,”Gunnion told the PA.

“I’ve known Ewan for a long time and have watched his career from afar with a lot of admiration.

“He’s an excellent footballer who leads by example, but just as importantly he has an excellent character and temperament.

“I have no doubt he’ll be a huge player for the club and his habits and influence will enhance the other players and team as a whole.”

Swifts were locked at 0-0 away at Harthill Royal at the break on Saturday but second half goals from Connor McLaren, Chris McLeish and Chris Scott netted the victory.

Gunnion said: “The surface and conditions were definitely a leveller but I thought the players dealt with the game well.

“The target was to be in the next round and that’s exactly what we achieved.

“These games are never easy and if you go in expecting teams to roll over you’re in for a shock.

“But we limited Harthill to one shot on goal and should have scored a lot more ourselves so I can’t complain about the performance other than to say our finishing could have been more clinical.”

Swifts now have a week off for some rest and recovery after a busy start to the season.

“We got minutes for a number of players returning from injury which was really pleasing and we came through the game without any further injuries,” Gunnion added.

“So, with a week off next week we should be in good shape, squad wise, when we come to play Dundonald.”
