New interim chief executive at Birmingham City Council

Birmingham City Council has appointed an interim chief executive - the fourth time someone has been installed in the top job at the authority since 2017.

Chief finance officer Clive Heaphy will act up until a permanent replacement for incumbent Dawn Baxendale is appointed, subject to approval by full council at its meeting on September 10.

He has been CFO since January 2018, prior to which he worked at Haringey Council and spent nearly five years with HS2.

Dawn Baxendale announced in July that she was stepping down from the post to take up the role of chief executive with Christchurch City Council in New Zealand.

She said at the time it had always been "a dream" for her and her family to start a new life in New Zealand.

Ms Baxendale joined the local authority in April 2018, replacing Stella Manzie who joined as interim chief executive a year earlier.

The recruitment process for the new permanent chief executive will begin in September and the council said a precise departure date will be agreed once Ms Baxendale's arrangements for her move to New Zealand had been finalised.
