
The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 3,177 new cases of coronavirus infection on Wednesday, exceeding 3,000 for the first time and marking a record high for the second day in a row.
Nationwide, the tally exceeded 9,000 for the first time ever, topping the previous record of 7,958 on Jan. 8. In addition to Tokyo, Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures also marked their highest case numbers of the pandemic Wednesday.
The capital's Wednesday tally was up by 1,345 from a week ago, and the daily tally was higher than 1,000 for ninth straight day.
The seven-day moving average surged 53% to 1,954.7 on Wednesday compared with the preceding seven-day period. The number of those seriously ill fell to 80, down by two from Tuesday.
