New indoor Covid-19 test centre first of its kind in Wirral

A new coronavirus testing centre will be opened in Wirral tomorrow.

The dedicated indoor site will open at Heswall Library at 2pm and is the first indoor centre to open in the borough.

It will operate in a similar way to semi-permanent sites in Birkenhead, Bebington and Liscard.

The centre will have a capacity to carry out around 288 tests per day. It can also be used to accommodate testing for a single-family group.

You should only use the testing site if you have Covid-19 symptoms.

Opening times:

  • Friday, November 6, 2pm-5pm
  • Saturday, November 7, 10am-5pm
  • Sunday, November 8, 8am-8pm (this opening time applies seven days per week thereafter)

Cllr Yvonne Nolan, chair of Wirral Council's social care and public health committee, said: “The opening of this new indoor local testing site in Heswall is an important reminder to us all that coronavirus is still a big problem in Wirral.

“Our infection rates remain high and our National Health Service is under increasing pressure as we head into winter. Only by identifying those people with coronavirus in our community early and ensuring they self-isolate will we begin to drive down the spread.

“As the days get shorter and colder, I am pleased we have been able to safely open an indoor testing facility that will hopefully make what can be a daunting experience, more comfortable and accessible for everyone.

“Wirral will now have four local testing sites at key locations throughout the borough ensuring anyone who needs a test can get one.”

No prior appointment is needed with walk-in slots available, although pre-booking via the council website is advised to guarantee a time slot.

If you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, a new continuous cough, high temperature and or a loss of sense of taste or smell you must self-isolate and book a test.

Financial support to help you self-isolate is now available through the Test and Trace Support Payment.
