New images showcase revamped Alexander Stadium

New images have been released showcasing how Birmingham's Alexander Stadium will be transformed for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The CGIs show a new 'West Stand' to replace the Main, Knowles and Nelson stands currently in situ while temporary tiered seating will also be constructed to boost seating numbers.

The current, permanent seating capacity of 12,700 will be expanded to 18,000 following the addition of the new stand with the tiered seating taking it 40,000 for the duration of the games.

Among the new features planned for the stadium in Perry Barr are a 400-metre warm up track and the re-laying of a new 400-metre, nine-lane competition track.

There will be improved public realm, additional parking and lighting, a practice throwing field and a new access road from the A453.

A decision on the planning application to redevelop the stadium is expected early next year.

Construction is due to start in the spring, if the project is approved by Birmingham's planning chiefs, and completed by winter 2021.

City council project director for the 2022 Games Neil Carney said: "The Games has provided this catalyst for change and given us this opportunity to do up Alexander Stadium, take down the existing stands that are there and develop a brand new West Stand."
