New images reveal what next stage of plan to completely overhaul Altrincham town centre will look like

Plans to completely overhaul the centre of Altrincham have moved a step closer.

New images have been released ahead of a public consultation asking for residents’ and businesses’ thoughts, led by the LK Group, which has been appointed project manager.

It is the next phase in the redevelopment of the town centre through joint plans from Trafford council and developers Bruntwood.

By rejuvenating streets and spaces, the council aims to provide an attractive town centre that improves the experience for all town centre users.

Coun James Wright, Trafford council’s executive member for housing and regeneration, said: “We’ve already seen an amazing transformation of Altrincham, from being labelled Britain’s biggest ghost town to becoming England’s champion high street. But we can’t rest on our laurels.

“We want to continue Altrincham’s regeneration to become a great place for shoppers, business owners and residents alike.”

The new phase of designs have been developed in conjunction with other planning applications for the town centre, such as the Stamford Quarter and Chapel Street developments.

Plans revolve around George Street, Market Street and Groby Road, Moss Lane and Regent Road. If further funding becomes available, Stamford New Road and Barrington Road will also be targeted.

The plans include reducing motor traffic, widening pedestrian areas, improving cycle infrastructure and improvements to pedestrian crossings.

Tree planting in the streets is also planned and developers aim to declutter the streets to improve accessibility for all users, including people with visual impairments.

Coun Wright added: “Altrincham is a fantastic place to live and visit and we want that to be the case for everyone. I believe these plans are a great way to maintain Altrincham’s reputation as a superb destination in its own right.

“I would urge people to look at the plans and submit their views for the future look of Altrincham.”

Consultation boards will be displayed in Altrincham Library, Pott Street, and The Contemporary Art Gallery on Stamford New Road.

The consultation is also available for viewing here.
