New Iceland, Homebase and M&S units to open at Derry retail park as £5m investment revealed

Plans to expand a retail park in Derry have been given the go-ahead.

More than 100 jobs are set to be created after it was revealed that £5m would be invested in the Crescent Link Retail Park.

Manchester-based David Samuel Properties is planning to expand the site that would upgrades to Homebase and M&S Foodhall.

Meanwhile, the project will also see Iceland's new venture - Food Warehouse - opening a new unit on the premises, with a new and improved car park also pinpointed for improvement.

It is understood that a number of other retailers are also being considered at present.

Matthew Beddow of David Samuel Properties said: "This announcement comes at a challenging time for the retail sector as it comes to terms with the increase in online shopping and the recovery from the impact of the coronavirus.

"This investment demonstrates the confidence in Derry-Londonderry of these powerful brands as a place for investment at an important moment for its economic growth.

"We have plans in place for a significant regeneration of the scheme, including the car park and public realm space, which will see a new exit created and an increase in parking spaces, to make this a handy destination for shoppers to choose."

A community consultation will take place in the coming weeks.

The site has been the subject of contention in recent years due to heavy traffic congestion from the retail park.

However, the owners of the sites says the new regeneration scheme would " see a new exit created and an increase in parking spaces to make this a handy destination for shoppers to choose".

"We have plans in place for a significant regeneration of the scheme, including the car park and public realm space," Mr Beddow added.

"We are committed to Derry-Londonderry and to addressing parking and traffic in the retail park that we know have concerned residents for a number of years.

"We are in negotiations with a number of other retailers and look forward to making more positive announcements soon."
