300

Release date: 2007

300 is a truly epic movie that's a retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae in the Greco-Persian Wars. It follows the story of King Leonidas (played by Gerard Butler), who must lead 300 Spartans into a massive battle against more than 300,000 soldiers and Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the 'God-King' of Persia.

But this isn't a typical historical action movie. Instead, it's based on the 1998 comic book series by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, which is really evident in the visual style of the film, that looks sort of like a comic book come to life. As you might expect, there are some brutal scenes here, but 300 is also a wonderful spectacle and well worth watching if you love slick action, classic stories and comic book tales reimagined for the big screen.

Cast Away

Release date: 2000
Main cast: Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Nick Searcy, Lari White

Cast Away is best described as a survival drama as it follows the story of Charles 'Chuck' Noland, a FedEx systems analyst played by Tom Hanks. Chuck is involved in a plane crash in the South Pacific and luckily winds up stranded on an uninhabited island. This is a tense yet introspective movie all about his desperate attempts to survive.

Expect to experience a whole range of emotions here as we watch Hanks flex his acting chops in one of his most iconic roles. He's completely alone for much of the movie, but he's so mesmerizing on screen you'll never get bored. There's tense action and sheer desperation, but ultimately this is a feel-good movie about endurance and the relentless power of the human spirit.

Elvis

There have been plenty of movies, TV series and documentaries about the legend that is Elvis over the years, but who better to bring a fresh version to the big screen that Baz Luhrmann, famous for some of the most beloved bold and extravagant movies like Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby.

Elvis stars up and coming talent Austin Butler (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Dune 2) in the lead role but the story is told from the perspective of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. It's packed with style, energy and a truly breath-taking performance from Butler – it's no surprise he won the Best Actor award at the 2023 Academy Awards.

The Royal Tenenbaums

Main cast: Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Danny Glover, Bill Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow

The Royal Tenenbaums is one of Wes Anderson's earlier movies, following the lives of the eccentric Tenenbaum family and its three gifted siblings, all of who had a lot of success earlier in life but disappointment and heartbreak as they got older. Gene Hackman plays their father, Royal Tenenbaum, who leaves when they're all teens and returns later to try and reconcile with his kids and ex-wife (played by Huston).

Like most Wes Anderson movies, there's a wonderful cast here, including Anjelica Huston and Ben Stiller. It's a real treat to see these actors in quirkier roles than you might be used to. You can also expect Anderson's distinct visual style, like symmetrical compositions and a limited, pastel color palette, and witty dialogue. If you're a fan of Wes Anderson or want a slower-paced, kooky movie, you'll love The Royal Tenenbaums.

The Die Hard film collection

Die Hard is one of the most classic and beloved action movies of all-time (just don't get caught up in the debate about whether it's also one of the best Christmas movies). It's actually based on the 1979 book Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp and follows the story of New York City police detective John McClane (played by Bruce Willis). John goes to meet his estranged wife and winds up caught in a terrorist attack in an LA skyscraper orchestrated by unforgettable villain Hans Gruber, played excellently by Alan Rickman.

Paddington

The 2014 movie Paddington might be based on the stories of Paddington Bear by Michael Bond, but it takes on a life of its own in this delightful movie that is somehow both a warm family favorite and a criticially-acclaimed film with an excellent score on Rotten Tomatoes – satisfying both is no easy feat.

It follows the story of Paddington (voiced by Ben Wishaw) who migrates from the jungles of Peru to London where he's adopted by the Brown family. The problem? An evil taxidermist (played by Nicole Kidman) wants to add poor Paddington to her collection. Expect fun, thrills, special effects and top acting. Paddington is one of those rare movies that we think anyone would enjoy.
