New Hucknall McDonald's will 'bring more people into the town', as building work starts

A local councillor says a new 24-hour McDonald's in Hucknall will 'bring more people into the town' with work having started to build the eatery.

The fast-food giant won an appeal to progress with the build after plans for the restaurant were initially rejected by Ashfield District Council planners.

Pictures taken by a local councillor show work has started on the site opposite the Tesco on the junction of Ashgate and Station Road.

Ashfield Independents Councillor John Wilmott, who represents Hucknall North, said the development had the potential to "bring more people into the town" and it can "only be good for other businesses".

He said it could help to take youngsters off the streets, adding: "The tram (stop) is only about 100 metres away.

"So it is a great opportunity for people to come in from the tram.

"People are always on about that the tram takes people out of Hucknall - this will be a great opportunity for people to come and visit Hucknall, knowing full well they can get a quick meal and then they can go and visit other places.

"We have so much in Hucknall that people could come and visit and see.

"We have a pretty good night time economy now. A number of good public houses have been renovated over the last few years."

Coun Wilmott, who sits on , added: "I was astounded at how quick they are developing the area.

"Much of it was derelict, it will make the area much, much brighter."

McDonald's bosses have expressed a desire to build a new 24-hour drive-thru - and said the restaurant was likely to create 65 new jobs.

Speaking earlier this year, a McDonald's spokesman said: "We can confirm that the appeal for a new drive-thru restaurant in Hucknall has been allowed, and that McDonald’s did not apply for costs to be covered by the council.

"We are very much looking forward to delivering our new restaurant and are aiming to open towards the end of this year or early next year.

"We believe the restaurant will bring significant investment to the town centre and the local community, as well as creating at least 65 new full and part-time jobs.”

Councillor Wilmott added: “Although the application was initially refused, this was mostly due to concerns about the possibility of anti-social behaviour and the highway infrastructure.

"As a council we’ve worked with McDonald's and the police architectural liaison officer to mitigate against potential highway and anti-social concerns.”

The site previously housed a warehouse for Doff Portland Limited.
