New housing plans for site once courted by Tesco

The site of a long-running saga over a new supermarket in a Birmingham suburb has been acquired by property developer Seven Capital.

The company, which is behind several city centre apartment projects, has bought the nine-acre plot on the corner of Hazelwell Lane and Pershore Road, in Stirchley, to build a new mixed-use complex.

Tesco planned to build a superstore there for many years and the project appeared to be finally moving forward last year when an eyesore community centre, Stirchley United Working Men's Club and a reclamation yard were all demolished.

But the supermarket giant announced earlier this year it was abandoning its plans to build there, despite saying in January 2015 that it was fully behind the scheme at the same time as the company scrapped others across the country.

Seven Capital has now acquired the brownfield plot in an undisclosed deal and is planning a mixed-use development comprising residential and retail units.

The company is now working Birmingham City Council and local stakeholders on formulating proposals for the site before submitting a formal planning application.

The plot is a short walk from Bournville station and could be close to a second station if plans to build new stops on the Camp Hill line go ahead.

Samuel Clark, development director at Seven Capital, said: "This site has languished for some time and given its location between Bournville, Selly Park, Moseley and Kings Heath, the investment by Seven Capital will play a critical role, catalysing further gentrification of this important Birmingham suburb."
