New housing development in West Lothian approved with retail unit featuring hot food takeaways

A new housing development, featuring a 390sqm retail/commercial building, has been approved in West Lothian.

The developers, FourWard Architecture & Masterplanning Ltd, sought permission for the new retail and commercial development, along with 27 dwellings, and a community garden.

West Lothian Council granted permission for the project yesterday (March 9), as the 15-year drive to develop and expand the area continues.

The works in Blackridge will feature 27 one and two bedroom homes, and the commercial unit with takeaway shops.

This latest development will coincide with plans to build another 185 homes nearby, with a convenience shop.

The two bedroom properties will only be available for those over 55-years old.

An agreement has been reached with Cairn Housing Association, who will act as the Registered Social Landlord (RSL), once development has been completed.

Planning was first agreed in 2019 but the application was amended to include the hot food facilities.

The Courier revealed in December that planning had been granted permission in principle to build another 185 new homes at the site, on land south of Craiginn Terrace, Blackridge.

That separate project will also feature a new Scotmid store, with the village’s population predicted to grow by one fifth.

The local councillor for the area, Stuart Borrowman, welcomed this week's news, saying: “This should mean the village has a coop convenience store by Christmas and increased housing choice, particularly for older residents.”

The head of planning, economic development and regeneration at West Lothian Council, Craig McCorriston, approved the new specifications on the application.

He said: “This variation to application 0889/MSC/19 accords with the terms of the development plan and the approved planning permission in principle ref 0223/P/17.

“Technical matters can be covered by planning conditions.

“The proposal complies with policies of the West Lothian Local Development Plan, 2018, as well as the Residential Development Guide Supplementary Guidance, 2019.

“There are no material considerations to indicate that the application should not be granted.”
