New houses to be purchased for council rent

Eight houses and 14 flats at a new housing development in Chryston are to be purchased by North Lanarkshire Council to add to its rental stock.

It forms part of the authority's wider plans to provide an additional 5000 council houses across the area by 2035.

They are part of a larger development of 90 properties being built by Allanwater Homes at the former Lanrig Holdings farmstead off Gartferry Road, close to Main Street.

One of the planning conditions for the site is that a quarter of the new houses are made available for affordable housing, with North Lanarkshire similarly having bought homes for rental elsewhere on the same site from neighbouring constructors Persimmon and Bellway.

Councillors on the finance and resources committee approved the latest £3.1 million purchase at their virtual meeting last week.

They were told in a report: “The purchase of these properties will [provide] high-quality housing for rent which will help address housing need; [they] will be built to Housing for Varying Needs standards, making them more accessible for people with a physical disability.”
