New hotel proposed for Swansea city centre

A new hotel planned for above H&M in Swansea.

Developers want to convert the first and second floors of the Oxford Street shop into a 47-room venue, with a small business centre and communal area.

The area of the building, Co-operative House, currently has office and fitness use.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application said hotel rooms would maximise the building's potential and provide much-needed visitor accommodation. The "applicant details" section of the application form was left blank.

No visitor parking is proposed.

Co-operative House is no more than 10 minutes by foot from the train station and bus station.

Hotel rooms are also planned as part of a separate scheme for the former Walkabout bar on nearby Wind Street.

The 20 rooms would take shape on the second and third floors, with a live music venue, Irish bar and dance club below.

A tourism needs assessment submitted as part of the Wind Street scheme said: "Swansea city centre is undergoing a complete transformation and the proposal is an opportunity to regenerate this area and address the under provision of high-quality tourist accommodation."

It added: "The new arena and numerous city-wide yearly events require more good quality accommodation to meet this growing need which is increasing year on year."

Meanwhile, a hotel up to eight storeys high is part of the ongoing Copr Bay redevelopment project off Oystermouth Road. It would have around 150 rooms and sit across from the arena, with both buildings facing onto a podium area.

The preferred bidder for the hotel is Cairn Group, but no planning application has been submitted yet.
