New hotel opens at Malua Bay as coast continues bushfire recovery

A 52-room hotel developed by Canberra's Liangis family opens in Malua Bay on Monday as the South Coast continues its recovery from the devastating summer bushfires.

The Abode Hotel is on a prime site, opposite the Malua Bay Beach, on what was long an abandoned petrol station site, on land owned by Canberra developer Sotiria Liangis.

The site was developed by Liangis Investments, and is under an operation agreement with Iconic Hotels, who are managing it as part of their Abode Hotels brand. (Geocon, meanwhile, is the parent company of Iconic Hotels).

The hotel has already had an opening of sorts, as residents sought shelter there as the fires bore down on Malua Bay.

The new accommodation is also pet-friendly and surfboard-friendly. It also has its own supply of pushbikes.

Iconic Hotels general manager Rien Donkin said Abode Hotels was committed to contributing to the regeneration of the South Coast after the bushfires.

He was "excited to provide an accommodation offering which will give further reason for visitors to return to the area".

Geocon managing director Nick Georgalis also welcomed Iconic Hotels foothold in the South Coast.

"Canberrans love the South Coast, so building a beachside hotel at Malua Bay has always made sense to me," he said.

'We are pleased to be able to contribute to the South Coast economy through jobs and attracting tourists."

A spokeswoman said the hotel was already booking out quickly for the Canberra Day long weekend, March 7, 8 and 9.

"The hotel still has a few more rooms to offer guests seeking a beach escape. However, based on the current booking appetite, these rooms will sell quickly," she said.

The hotel is on the corner of George Bass Drive and Kuppa Avenue.
