New hotel near Anfield Stadium approved despite Airbnb concerns

A new hotel near Anfield Stadium can be built after councillors finally gave the project the go ahead this afternoon.

Liverpool Council’s planning committee approved the plans for a new hotel around 500 metres from the ground.

The plans will see a building on Oakfield, a quiet side road, converted to a 27 bed hotel, though it will be accessed via the busier Oakfield Road.

It would be able to accommodate up to 54 guests and would have a car park at the back of the premises.

The proposals had originally been considered by councillors earlier this year but were deferred after a number of committee members asked for further consultation to take place with nearby residents.

Neighbours had raised concerns about the hotel’s policies on a number of issues after a rise in the number AirBnB style lettings in the area.

Speaking briefly, a number of councillors at today’s meeting, including John Prince and Billy Marrat, said they were pleased the applicant had taken extra steps to alleviate concerns from councillors and neighbours.

The report from planning officer said the proposals “would bring back into productive use a large neglected and underutilised property in a prominent location”.

It said: “Notwithstanding a number of objections from ward councillors and neighbouring residents, the scheme would offer satisfactory levels of amenity for future residents without impacting unduly on the residential amenity of neighbours.

“While residents of Oakfield are concerned that the C1 [hotel] use is not appropriate in a quiet residential location, the hotel would be oriented towards the more vibrant Oakfield Road which enjoys a mix of uses.”

Committee members unanimously approved the plans, meaning development can now commence.
