New hope in Scots mum death mystery as Greek crime show generates fresh leads

A Greek crimebusting show has sparked new information emerging about the death of expat Jean Hanlon.

Police are reinvestigating her case 11 years after her body was recovered from Heraklion harbour in Crete.

Her son Michael Porter appeared on Light in the Tunnel – the country’s answer to Crimewatch – on Friday night to encourage witnesses to come forward.

The 35-year-old revealed fresh leads are now being followed up by officers after viewers got in touch during the live broadcast.

He said: “We’ve still to establish full details but our lawyer said people have been in touch.

“We hope the new information will help solve mum’s case.” Host Angeliki Nikolouli suddenly jumped up and ran to the phones which were set up nearby after Jean’s death had been highlighted.

Michael said: “I wondered if it was all for show. But I’ve great confidence in Light in the Tunnel.”

Jean, originally from Dumfries, was found four days after she sent a friend a text message which said “help me”.

A Channel 5 documentary last June – Murdered in Paradise: The Killing of Jean Hanlon – led to a fresh probe.

Police wrote off the 53-year-old’s death in 2009 as accidental drowning but a coroner’s report found she had suffered shattered ribs, a punctured lung and facial wounds.
