New homes to be built after ‘dangerous eyesore’ demolished

New terraced homes will be built in one Merseyside town after the demolition of an "eyesore" described as "dangerous" due to numerous incidents of vandalism.

Five four-bedroom terraced homes have been approved and will be constructed on the site of the former Rock Ferry Baptist Church on New Chester Road in Rock Ferry, Wirral.

The applicant behind the plan is Peter Hughes, who owns Anfield Marble, which has been operating as a stone yard for over 100 years.

The church has been damaged by several fires in recent years caused by vandals and its windows and doors are now smashed and boarded up.

In a planning statement to Wirral Council, Architectural Emporium Ltd, the applicant’s agent, said the current site “is a source of further danger to the public”.

For this reason, there was “no scope for redeveloping the existing structure although this was investigated at the feasibility stage”.

The demolition will remove the church which has become an eyesore and a blot on the landscape, according to the architect’s planning statement.

It is hoped the plan for five new homes will help regenerate the area and improve its appearance, as well as supporting the need both in Wirral and nationally for more affordable housing.

The site has good transport access, as it lies within a five minute walk of Rock Ferry station and is located on a primary bus route.

For car owners, each property will have one off-street parking space allocated, with visitor parking available on the neighbouring Chatham Road and other surrounding streets.
