New homes for the elderly are unveiled in £3m project

Impressive new homes built for elderly people with disabilities or mobility problems have recently been unveiled in Lanarkshire.

Despite the challenges of a year in lockdown, Rutherglen and Cambuslang Housing Association has successfully completed the development of 18 new homes on the site of an old filling station on Hamilton Road in Halfway.

The £2.9m development was built in a successful partnership with Wilson Developments (Scotland) Ltd.

John McNulty, the association’s maintenance manager, praised the standard of workmanship.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “Everyone involved in the project worked together to ensure the highest standards were achieved and are delighted with the finished product.”

Tenants were also full of praise for their new homes and were impressed with the innovative measures taken to make the flats fuel efficient that will help their reduce bills.

These include the installation of modern solar panels, SMART meters, high performance gas central heating systems, and double-glazed units.

All of the one-bedroom flats are built to amenity standards specifically for elderly residents with disabilities or mobility issues and are fully wheelchair accessible.

Most of the flats also have generously sized shower rooms with walk-in showers, open plan kitchens, and living rooms.

The two-storey building has a lift and resident parking to allow full accessibility.

Elaine Lister, the association’s director, said: “In addition to our completion of the 35 amenity homes recently completed at Glenroyal Gardens, this development goes some way in delivering housing for the needs of our elderly and disabled community.

“We will continue to look for opportunities to provide more high quality, affordable housing for people in housing need and to support the communities we work in.”
