New Home Secretary announced amid post-Rayner cabinet reshuffle

  • Previously Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, Ms Mahmood worked on addressing jail overcrowding, court backlogs, and introduced legislation to overhaul the prison system.
  • Ms Mahmood supports curbs on migration to ensure integration and believes the European Convention on Human Rights needs reform, particularly regarding Article 8 in immigration cases.
  • Her appointment has been welcomed by some, including Blue Labour founder Lord Glasman, while the Refugee Council has outlined key challenges such as ending asylum hotels and speeding up asylum decisions.
