New holiday lodges are set to be coming to Gateshead

Self catering holiday lodges are set to be built on a Gateshead golf course after councillors voted to approve the plans.

William Walker was given outline planning permission by Gateshead Council's planning committee to build the lodges at the Beamish Park Hotel, on Beamish Burn Road, at a meeting on Wednesday.

The full details of the layout, design or number of proposed lodges have not been provided at this stage.

These set details will be ironed out in a later application but documents submitted to the authority said the units would be of "contemporary, high quality design".

Gateshead Council's planning department recommended approval for the scheme saying that there is "an indication of a lack of fundamental concern about the proposals".

A planning statement said the lodges are close to the region's key tourist attractions and would fill a gap in the market.

"Whilst delivering the tourism-related objectives alone does not constitute very special circumstances, it is advised that the proximity of the development to key tourist attractions and the potential for it to fill a gap in the existing range of tourist accommodation close to these attractions is likely to contribute to making a case for very special circumstances," it said.
